What to expect when you call 988

1. You'll speak with a trained counselor

Crisis counselors are trained to listen, provide support, and help you through difficult moments. They won't judge you or tell you what to doβ€”they're there to listen and help you find your own path forward.

2. Your call is confidential

What you share stays private. Counselors may only break confidentiality if they believe you're in imminent danger and need immediate emergency assistance.

3. You can call for yourself or someone else

988 is available if you're concerned about yourself or someone you care about. Counselors can provide guidance on how to support someone in crisis.

4. No situation is too small

You don't need to be in immediate danger to call. If you're struggling, overwhelmed, or just need someone to talk to, 988 is here for you.
